Looking Down from the Bridge |
Description: |
We made a side trip from Torreon to see the spectacular path of the long abandoned Mapimi Railroad. Belonging to the Compania Minera de Penoles, the Mapimi Railroad was a 30 inch gage railroad that went from a connection with the Mexican Central at Bermejillo to a very large smelting complex at Mapimi. Just East of Mapimi was a branch to the mining town of Ojuela. Needing to gain elevation quickly, most of this branch was a Rack Railroad with grades varying between 9 at 13.6 percent. At the top of the grade in Ojuela was (and still remains) a 1067 foot suspension bridge leading across a deep cut to additional mone shafts. At one time ore cars was moved across this bridge. The former Mapimi Railroad right of way is now a paved road. These photos are all taken of or from the Mipimi Railroad Right of way. Waiting |
Description: |
Though we made a valiant attemt to shoot a train on the Ferromex bridge in the canyon between Juan Eugenio and Picardias on the border of the Mexican states of Durango and Coahuila, it was not meant to be! No trains came before the shadow of the monutains enveloped the main track due to MW working north of Picardias. |
