MPA 1506 |
Description: |
This old Geep, now preserved at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum, has quite a history. Built by EMD in 1953 as Reading Company 621, it was sold before Conrail to the Emons Industries controlled Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad, who first numbered it as 86, then as 1506. It was moved to service on the former Reading Perkiomen branch in 1998 after Emons had gained control of Penn Eastern Rail Lines a year earlier. Never operated on the Perk, it remained there after Penn Eastern became independent, following Genesee & Wyoming's purchase of Emons in 2002. Acquired by its present owner, the Reading Company Technical & Historical Society in 2008, it was subsequently moved to Hamburg from Emmaus over Norfolk Southern and Reading & Northern rails. It will one day be restored back to its original appearance of olive green and gold lettering and might be operated by the museum. |

The Reading Railroad Heritage Museum has one of the last remaining Reading Company Alco RS-3 locomotives, built in 1952 at the plant in Schenectady, NY. Originally assigned to the Reading's Rutherford yard near Harrisburg to replace steam, this locomotive worked diligently in freight service before being retired from the railroad's roster in 1973 and sold up north to a company in Montreal, Canada. The unit was acquired by the RCT&HS from a private leasing company in 1993. It last worked as a switcher for Domtar Packaging of Red Rock, Ontario as their number 68. Seen still wearing the faded Domtar paint scheme. |

Originally built for the Philadelphia & Reading Railway as a baggage car, it was later used on the relief train based out of Saint Clair yard as a tool car for workers. RDG 2060 |
Description: |
Former RDG 2060 is a good example of the upgrades done to the cars on certain upscale trains on the system. This car was part of the train "Schuylkill" and featured a small kitchen and cafe style area which was utilized during the train's trip between Philadelphia and Pottsville. The car was made into a full dining car in the 1960s and moved to the "Wall Street" run in the opposite direction out of Philly to the CNJ terminal at Jersey City, NJ. Retired in the 1970s and sold to become a diner, it was acquired by the museum in 2002 where it currently awaits restoration. |
