Uncertain future
Title:  Uncertain future
Description:  This was a shot I took in the spring of 1986 looking west from the Soo Line high bridge after the railroad shut the line down and the rust was starting to slowly overtake the rail. This line would be out of service for about 1.5 years before the Wisconsin Central began to own/operate it in the fall of 1987.

Heavy unneeded steel
Title:  Heavy unneeded steel
Description:  This is a follow up shot to the other shot at the high bridge, and I remember feeling quite, profoundly sad that this might be the end of this magnificent bridge as a rail route. There were 4 routes from the Twin Cities to Chicago, and did we really need them? Luckily, we did.

Title:  Soo/CNW crossing
Description:  This is looking SW on the CNWs line from Altoona to Superior with the Soo Lines own Chicago to Duluth line crossing overhead. This crossing does not exist anymore, as the Soo/CNW were combined in the mid to late 90s into one route with the Soo to the south and the CNW to the north.

Title:  Minnetonka Zephyr
Description:  In the mid 1980s, Dakota Rail operated a dinner train in the Lester Prairie area that ran along this old BN branchline at very, low speeds. The track was feeble and the train lasted a couple years before moving to Stillwater MN as the Minnesota Zephyr in July 1987. Here the train is heading east on 66 lb rail.

Title:  Awaiting the scrappers
Description:  Looking north in downtown in early spring 1987, the once busy Skally line of the BN is now silent, its ABS and 115 lb jointed rail awaiting removal and several more communities will be left without rail service. I have always thought BN made a mistake removing this line.

New railroad in Wisconsin!
Title:  New railroad in Wisconsin!
Description:  This was the new alignment from the old GN to the Soo Line near Dedham, WI in 1988 as the BN was preparing to shift from their trouble prone bridge to the Soo Lines more stable alignment. My kind of house!
Title:  My kind of house!
Description:  This is how Canada does it right! MOW has small houses and garages for the speeders to be kept out of the elements. This is harsh climate in the winter, and I am guessing that working track here is not for the faint of heart!

Title:  Along the Algoma Central
Description:  The first time I rode this line in about 1987 to Agawa Canyon, I was so impressed I decided to ride it all the way to Hearst. It has some of the most pristine, scenery I have seen, and south of Agawa Canyon you feel like you are in the Rocky Mountains!

Curves for days!
Title:  Curves for days!
Description:  The Algoma Central is probably one of the curviest lines in Canada, as it negotiates many lakes and the geological remains of large rocks/mountains on the east end of Lake Superior. You wouldnt expect it in what many would think would be flat prairie land. Amazingly beautiful area.
