Album Info:Here are both covers and the complete contents of a 64-page booklet published by Mr. Harry P. Albrecht entitled "World Famous Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, Pennsylvania Railroad." It was issued originally during September of 1973. "Altoona . . . a magic name that conveys instantly to the minds of many individuals in American and foreign countries the famous shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad located at that point . . . a massed assembly of men and materials of whom it can be truly said . . . 'Altoona Works can make or repair anything necessary for the operation of a railroad.'" (Page 1)

Bottom Photo: Shown here is PRR engine #1752, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata in April of 1914 and retired in December of 1948.

Left Side, Top Photo: Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #142, an Odd Class A (4-4-0) "American" built in the Altoona Machine Shops (AMS) in December of 1866 and retired in 1888; it's the first locomotive built in Altoona. Left Side, Middle Photo: Engine #173 is an H-1 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in AMS in November of 1875 and retired in April of 1896. Left Side, Bottom Photo: #963 is a B-3 (0-6-0) switcher built in AMS in December of 1882 and sold to E.H. Wilson in March of 1905. Right Side, Top Photo: Engine #1515 is a D-15 (4-4-0) "Compound" built in AMS in October of 1892 and retired in November of 1905. Right Side, Middle Photo: Engine #1223 is a D-16SB (4-4-0) "American" built in Juniata in 1905 and presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Right Side, Bottom Photo: Engine #1067 is an E-6S (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata as number "5075" in December of 1910, renumbered "1067" in December of 1911, and retired in June of 1950.

Description:  Here is page 55 of a 64-page booklet published by Harry P. Albrecht entitled "World Famous Horseshoe Curve, Altoona, Pennsylvania Railroad." It was first issued in September of 1973. Partial Caption: "Build at the Altoona Works in 1919, the Class HC-1s (2-8-8-0) simple mallet locomotive stands beside a train of West Jersey & Seashore wooden MU coaches on exhibition at Tennessee Ave., Atlantic City, 1924." Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3700, the HC-1S (2-8-8-0) built in Juniata during June of 1919 and retired in August of 1929 after just a decade of revenue service. The name of the Hostler pictured here is not recorded.

Photo Caption: "More activity near the Juniata Shops. On the far track an H-10 passing two M-1a engines and in the foreground K-4 No. 612." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #612 is a K-4SA (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata as a K-4S during April of 1917, later equipped with a front-end throttle and reclassified as a K-4SA, and retired in April of 1958 after 41 years of faithful service. Here is a passage from the text: "It could be called the 'greatest show on earth' ~ that parade of trains over the World Famous Horseshoe Curve, moving continuously since February 15, 1854!" (Note: Both of the structures pictured here have since been demolished.)
