Culvert on the old Old Main Line
Title:  Culvert on the old Old Main Line
Description:  The original Old Main Line of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad snaked west along the Patapsco River valley, largely following the route of the river, but also avoiding hills. This made for sharp curves and left the railroad vulnerable to flooding. Between 1900 and 1908, the railroad rebuilt most of the Old Main Line, creating tunnels, easing curves, and improving right of way. In doing so, circa 1906 the track that once ran on this 19th century culvert was re-aligned a few hundred feet south.

Stone sill track recycled
Title:  Stone sill track recycled
Description:  The original 1830's Baltimore & Ohio main line west from Baltimore used various methods of building track. One of these employed stone sills, which were long rectangular blocks of granite with channels chiseled into them in which the iron strap rail was fastened. Contrary to how current track is laid with ties that run perpendicular to the rail, the stone sills ran parallel and underneath the rail. Difficult to maintain, and unsuited for increasing weights and traffic volumes, as the stone sill track was replaced the sills used to support the rail found other uses. Here a number have been collected to form the floor of a viaduct, itself taken out of use by 1906.

Description:  Here is a close up photo of one of the granite sills that the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad used to support its rail in the 1830s. Although worn by time and water, one can still make out the chiseled edge in which the cast iron strap rail sat, and the holes for the bolts that fastened the rail to the sill.
