Kennecott 407 |
Description: |
Kennecott Copper 125-ton electrics 407 and 402 were on an ore train at Copperton Yard, just outside of the big copper mine at Bingham Canyon. They will haul the train 28 miles to one of the mills near the Great Salt Lake. The 3200-horsepower locomotives were built by General Electric in December 1947 and retired in March 1982. A carman is attaching ground air to the train on the adjacent track. This was the normal practice, so that the locomotives wouldn't have to pump up the air after they coupled on. (date approximate) |

MWSCO 6 |
Description: |
MWSCO – MidWest Storage Company – 80-ton GE number 6 was at the Missouri Pacific’s Avondale Yard just west of New Orleans. This 500HP locomotive had been built under GE serial number 17902 in June 1943 as U.S. Army 7857 for service at the Umatilla Ordnance Depot in Hermiston, Oregon. It went to the U.S. Navy as 65-00509 (in-house 6) before being sold to Eveready Equipment, and it subsequently worked for several owners. MWSCO 6 was coupled to an unlettered Alco S2, serial no. 73600, built in July 1945 as Rock Island 724. It had most recently been used by Continental Grain at the nearby elevator in Westwego until that facility exploded on 22 December 1977. It subsequently showed up at the Continental elevator in Milwaukee. |

The sign next to the first car showed that the speed limit on the bridge was 45. |

Southern Crescent |
Description: |
The low morning sun illuminated the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT as it sat in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, awaiting its 6:45 AM departure. The train consisted of E8A's 6902, 6910, 6908 and 6914 with 10 cars: baggage-dormitory car 706 SOUTH CAROLINA, coaches 837, 840, 819 and Amtrak 5680, sleepers 2023 WARRIOR RIVER, Amtrak 2619 PACIFIC MEADOW and 3499 ROYAL PALM, diner 3306 and dome car 1613. In less than a year, Amtrak would take over the operation of the train, and scenes like this would disappear forever. |

Southern Crescent |
Description: |
The northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT was being inspected and service on what had once been Track 10 of Birmingham's Terminal Station, before continuing on its journey from New Orleans to New York City. Between 1909 and 1969 the vacant land on the left had been occupied by the station and most of its platforms. Today's Train No. 2 consisted of E8A's 6902, 6910, 6908 and 6914 with 10 cars: baggage-dormitory car 706 SOUTH CAROLINA, coaches 837, 840, 819 and Amtrak 5680, sleepers 2023 WARRIOR RIVER, Amtrak 2619 PACIFIC MEADOW and 3499 ROYAL PALM, diner 3306 and dome car 1613. In less than a year, Amtrak would take over the operation of the train and it would begin using the Louisville & Nashville station, so scenes like this would not last for much longer. |

Southern 3589 |
Description: |
Southern Railway 3589 was photographed in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal about one year before the railroad turned over the operation of the SOUTHERN CRESCENT to Amtrak. This was one of three Railway Post Office-baggage cars built for the railroad in late 1950 by American Car & Foundry. The 3589 was technically owned by the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific - as shown by the initials on the letterboard at this end of the car, while the 1727 and 1728 were owned by the Southern itself; and all three were converted into full baggage cars after RPO service ended. The 1727 and 1728 were retired when Amtrak took over the operation of the SOUTHERN CRESCENT in 1979, but this car was sold to Amtrak. It was initially numbered Amtrak second 1022, then modified for head-end power and renumbered 1127, and was stored in 2007. The lettering on the end of the car reads THIS CAR EQUIPPED WITH HYATT JP1A OIL BOX JOURNAL BEARINGS-DO NOT SUBSTITUTE ALTERNATE BEARINGS. |
