Coal Power. A photo similar to this one was published in the September 1981 issue of "The Keystone," page 7. Photo Caption: "This amazing photograph was taken by Charles B. Chaney from the inspection car at the rear of the train pulled by K-5 No. 5699. Another section of the Inspection Trip is about to pull up and pass Chaney's train. This section was hauled by two K-4s locomotives, with No. 3768 in the lead." #3768 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1920 and retired in October of 1953 after 33 years of faithful service.

Coal Power. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken near the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1938. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #3768, #4046, and a pair of "I" Class (2-10-0) "Decapods" whose road numbers are not recorded. #3768 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during June of 1920 and retired in October of 1953. #4046 is a B-6SB (0-6-0) switcher built in February of 1924 and retired in August of 1950. In this context, the "Pacific" is departing the Station with a passenger train, the switcher awaits its next assignment, while the "Decapods" are powering a freight train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible in the background are some of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. It's classic Altoona railroadin'!

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #373, an HH-1 (2-8-8-2) built by the American Locomotive Company as Norfolk & Western Railroad number "2000" during February of 1919, sold to the PRR and renumbered "373" in July of 1943, and retired in November of 1947 after 28 years of two-system service. This locomotive may have been involved in a wreck: the front of the smoke box is gone, as is part of the left cylinder assembly, and the pilot steps are bent back.
