PRR Coaling Tipple, 1965 |
Description: |
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Here is a view facing northeast. Once upon a time, this was one of the busiest and most important places in all of PRR-Altoona. Eight steam engines could be serviced simultaneously! Now, it is just an empty shell ~ haunted by ghosts of glories past! |

Description: |
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Here is a another view facing westward. Shown here are two locomotives that have just exited the Roundhouse. The EMD switcher has pulled the inert ALCo locomotive to this point. After the railroader in the photo throws the switch, the EMD will push the ALCo to the East Altoona Ready Tracks so that the latter may return to revenue service. Partially visible on the right are more deadlined locomotives. |

Coaling Tipple. Here is an original telephoto view that I took from atop the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Here is a view facing north. A speeding westbound passenger train is about to pass through "The Hole" under HOMER Tower (not visible on the left). In the background are the Westbound Hump tracks linking the Classification Yard (to the left) with the Receiving Yard (to the right). In the foreground are two in- and out-bound tracks for freight traffic. The girder bridge at the lower right passes over the East Branch of the Juniata River which winds its way through Tyrone and Spruce Creek, and merges eventually with the West Branch near Huntingdon. |

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8541, #8532, #8530, #8531, #8534, and #8535. All are ES-12M's built by EMD and rated at 1,200 horsepower each. #8541 was built in 1952, but all of the others were built in 1953. They are pulling a westbound 39-car mixed-cargo freight train past ANTIS Tower. The caboose is #477534. This is another view facing northeast. On the far left are the Westbound Receiving Yards, filled with rusting freight cars. On the far right, many dead-lined Diesels, old freight cars, and even some steam locomotive tenders are also visible. |

Coaling Tipple. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 September 1965. Shown here on either side of the venerable Water Tower is a single decomissioned steam locomotive tender and a Baldwin switcher that was involved in a serious accident. (Regrettably, I did not record the switcher's number.) In the near background are some obsolete passenger cars. In the far background are the Westbound Classification Yards. |

PRR Coaling Tipple, 1965 |
Description: |
Coaling Tipple. Here is an original photo that I took of the Pennsylvania Railroad's coaling tipple in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, during October of 1965. Visible here is the covered area where hopper cars were emptied of their contents. The coal was then hauled to the top of the coaling tower and dumped via wheeled buckets that were pulled-up by cables. Note the string of "Yellow Dot" 100-ton hopper cars a bit further back. |
