Album Info:Originally constructed as narrow gauge in 1882, the right of way followed Soldier Creek up the west side of Soldier Summit on a 4% grade. By 1890 the line was standard gauged and a few years later, double tracked. A new alignment was built in 1913 between Detour and Soldier Summit using a pair of horseshoe curves and reducing the grade to a steady 2%. In the 1990's, Soldier Summit was a busy mountain railroad. Coal trains, TOFC, Manifests and helper movements kept the rails polished. It was typical to see 12-15 trains during daylight hours. In 1988, Rio Grande Industries merged with the Southern Pacific. SP locomotives soon began to run over Soldier Summit, but one could still photograph D&RGW power.

Description:  A Cotton Belt B40-8 leads the CHOAF (Chicago - Oakland) downhill at Detour. Originally the route up the west side of Soldier Summit was a 4% grade that closely followed the current grade of US Highway 6. A new double track line with a 2% grade was constructed in 1913 betweeen Detour and the Summit.
