Album Info:Here are nine original photos that I took in and about the Pennsylvania Railroad's Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 December 1965. The intent is to suggest what it was like, railroad wise, on a typical Saturday afternoon in Altoona during December of 1965. These color slides are presented in the order that I took them. For more details on these and other PRR Diesel locomotives, see the Keystone Crossings Database: http://pennsyrr.com/kc/data/diesels

PRR Passenger Station, 1965
Title:  PRR Passenger Station, 1965
Description:  Station. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on the afternoon of 11 December 1965. Shown here is the PRR's Passenger Station located at the intersection of 10th Avenue and 13th Street. The ground floor was the space for passengers, while the second floor was where PRR crews checked in and out before and after their runs. Both east- and westbound passenger trains stopped in Altoona to change both engine and train crews. During 1946, there were 72 regularly-scheduled passenger trains a day which stopped in Altoona ~ so that's at least 144 crew changes per day, plus hundreds of passengers!

PRR 12th Street Bridge, 1965
Title:  PRR 12th Street Bridge, 1965
Description:  Station. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on the afternoon of 11 December 1965. On the left is the tiny patch of tattered tarmack provided for passengers to board trains. The "new" and functionally-ugly 12th Street Bridge is in the middle. The gray, two-story structure in the distance is the Railway Express Office. The large, red brick structure on the right was once part of what was known as the "Altoona Machine Shops" where generations of dedicated Pennsylvania Railroaders built everything from freight cars to engine tenders to steam locomotives, not to mention experimental electric and diesel engines!
