Description:  PC Power. Here is an original photo that I took at the Penn Central Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1968. Shown here are PC engines #6171, #2330, and another unit whose number is not recorded. #6171 is an SD45 built by GM-EMD in December of 1967 and rated at 3,600 horsepower. #2330 is a GP35 built by GM-EMD in January of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They are pulling an eastbound mixed-cargo freight train down the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve to Altoona and points East. Wave to the engineman!

Description:  PC Power. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of Penn Central Railroad engine #1423, an F3A built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad as EH-15 number "9686" in February of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, later regeared and reclassified as an EF-15A, and renumbered "1423" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. The best one can say about this situation is "Oops!" The photographer's name, the date, and the location are not recorded. According to Mr. Mark Branibar, the location is most likely the former New York Central yards in Sharonville, Ohio.

Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #4352 is an FP7A built as Pennsylvania Railroad number "9852" in June of 1952 and renumbered "4352" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. #1514 is an F7A built as PRR number "9814" in April of 1951 and renumbered "1514" in for the merger. In this context, they're pulling some empty hopper cars up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Looks to me like they've both seen better days! Penn Central Railroad engine #8062 is an LRS-1200 built by Lima-Hamilton as New York Central Railroad number "5810" in September of 1950, rated at 1,200 horsepower, later rebuilt with a GM-EMD prime mover, and renumbered "8062" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Fairbanks-Morse and Lima Diesels ~ Eastern and Canadian Roads" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (902-58).

According to Mr. Mark Branibar, "DS44-660 #8378 was the former PC (PRR paint) 7882, which was the former PRR 9032. Never received PC paint. This was as far as it got before retirement on February 21, 1971."

Shown here (F to R) are PC engines #6121, #8071, and another unit whose number is not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #6121 is an SD45 built in October of 1966 and rated at 3,600 horsepower; its original PRR number was the same. #8071 is a GP38-2. They are passing the Altoona Passenger Station with a long string of hopper cars that they have brought down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve from Gallitzin and points West. The large structure in the distance is the former Pennsylvania Railroad Test Plant; a bit further to the right is the 17th Street Bridge; in the far distance are the eastern slopes of the Allegheny Mountains.
