Thomaston Railroad Station |
Description: |
This very elegant brick station has stood since 1881, when it was constructed by the original Naugatuck Railroad. The station and adjacent rail line became under New Haven Railroad control in 1887 under lease, with the larger company merging the Naugatuck into the larger system in 1906. NH passenger service ended here in the late 1950s with the station falling into disrepair over the decades. The Railroad Museum of New England began restoring the structure in 1996 and work has since continued both inside and out to return the building to its former glory. As can be seen here, they have done an excellent job so far in the restoration. The building is now the home of the museum and its operating subsidiary Naugatuck Railroad, with their many different historic excursions originating at this point for trips along this historic railroad line. |

BM 1109 |
Description: |
One of the oldest diesel electrics in preservation today, former Boston & Maine 1109 was one of three SW-1 units built by EMC for use in the yards around North Station in Boston, long before the days of Amtrak and the MBTA. This locomotive worked for its original owner for twenty years before the start of its second life in service on New England shortlines owned by the Pinsly Company. Number 1109, along with sister 1110, was acquired by the museum in the fall of 1986. The paint scheme on the locomotive matches those of the steam locomotives it once worked alongside, before the days of the Minuteman and Bluebird looks for the B&M's diesel fleet. It is one of quite a few pre World War II constructed diesels preserved throughout the Northeastern United States, representing a time when the diesel was still an outsider on the railroad scene and mainly confined to yard movements. |

Nicely restored for display, and open for tours as well, this former Boston & Maine caboose has only been a steel sided car since the late 1950s. Originally constructed in 1921 by the Laconia Car Company in New Hampshire, it was built as a wooden car, although not much remains of that part of its history these days. |

Description: |
A little warm for the use of a snowplow this day but it sure makes for an interesting sight. Maine Central received this plow in 1936 from the Russell Snowplow Company of Pennsylvania. It also was operated by the Green Mountain Railroad of Vermont for many years before GMRC was acquired by the Vermont Rail System. The Naugatuck Railroad still occasionally uses the plow to keep the right of way clear during those harsh Connecticut snowstorms. |

Crane Train Display |
Description: |
The crane, built in 1954, is one of the few pieces of rolling stock left from B&M/MEC subsidiary Portland Terminal Company, which once operated trackage and yards around the city of Portland, ME. The MEC gondola was constructed in 1939 and wears a similar paint scheme to the B&M SW-1 at the head of the display train. Both pieces of equipment were constructed at a time when B&M and MEC had joint management. |

Calling the Naugatuck Valley its home for the past fifteen years, this 1977 built GE is quite the historic unit. The Providence & Worcester Railroad of Massachusetts would later add this locomotive to their roster, the source of its current paint scheme and number. |

CNDX 2023 |
Description: |
A member of the New Haven's FL-9 fleet that once transported trains of passengers between the large stations in New York City and various points in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Number 2023 was built as NH 2057 in the fall of 1960 and also served Penn Central and Conrail later in its career. The unit is also one of four FL-9s rebuilt for the Connecticut DOT in 1985 and restored back to its original McGinnis paint scheme. Retired from commuter operations in 2002, it arrived at the museum a few months later. There were sixty FL-9s constructed by EMD between 1956 and 1960, all for the New Haven. Longer than a standard F unit, they have the capability of operating either on diesel or third rail electric power. |

Description: |
Probably the only one of its type preserved in a museum setting, former Metro North SPV-2000 293 rests near the back of the CERM's yard awaiting restoration. The Budd Company of Philadelphia constructed thirty of these self propelled cars with most of them sold to either Metro North or ConnDOT. Originally meant to be a successor to the RDC, these cars never lived up to expectations and suffered so much from frequent breakdowns that they were more often than not towed behind a locomotive. |

VALE 0800 |
Description: |
This 44-ton locomotive rolled out of the General Electric facility at the end of 1950 and began its long career serving railroads in the northeast. Numbered 400, it began its duties as the Long Island Railroad shop switcher at Morris Park, the only 44-ton switcher ever to grace the the New York area railroad's roster. Retired from active duty in 1963, the unit was acquired for use on the Black River & Western Railroad, an upstart tourist operation on the PRR Flemington Branch in New Jersey. The 400 would work in both passenger and switching operations there as the BRW would not become a freight carrier until 1970. It would also be the first of three locomotives to carry the number 400 on Black River's roster. In 1969 another upstart tourist operation, the Valley Railroad, acquired the locomotive for operations based in Essex, CT on a former New Haven branch line. It was then that the historic unit received its New Haven like paint scheme and number. Replaced by larger GE built 80-ton units, the locomotive was acquired in 1996 by the museum. |
