Album Info:The Yorktown Power Station was constructed in 1957 and powers approximately 285,000 homes on the Virginia Peninsula. The Dominion Energy power station has a net generating capacity of 1,141 megawatts provided by three power generating units. Units 1 & 2 are coal fired and unit 3 is oil fired. The completion of Skiffes Creek connector project, providing the peninsula with energy from the Surry Nuclear Power Station, will make Yorktown Plant obsolete. Units 1 and 2 will go off line by the end of 2019 and the plant is scheduled for full closure by 2021. But until the connector project is fully on line its business as usual at Yorktown. Yorktown’s unit 3 burns Bunker C fuel oil around the clock to provide energy to Dominion users. When the demand for energy increases Dominion must fire up the coal burning units 1 & 2. The coal presently in the plant is Premier Elkhorn coal from Myra, Kentucky, delivered over the last week by CSX T185. CSX brings the 102 car coal train up the Amoco Branch. Yorktown’s yard tracks can only hold 35 hopper cars on each track. CSX must split up the train up at Wolf Trap Road to ensure Hornsbyville Road is not blocked for more than 5 minutes, per local state law. Once CSX leaves the plant the Dominion Energy switcher goes to work. They typically only handle 18 cars at a time, shoving them through a thawing shed and then dumping the coal in the shaker house. It take the remote control operator 5-7 minutes to empty a hopper car. Coal is then sent up into the plant ready to be fed into the burners or diverted to a pile in the coal yard. Dominion had approximately 72 hours to empty the train before CSX returns for the empty hopper cars.
