BNSF 5188 • Fullerton CA • 01/28/07
Description:
A train of empty ethanol tank cars, BNSF X-WATABE7-26, snakes through the crossover as it moves from Track 2 to Track 1 at Fullerton Junction. Symboled as an empty unit grain train (because ethanol is a grain product), this train – pulled by a set of three Dash 9-44CWs – 5188, 4341 and 4080 – is heading from Watson, in the Port of Los Angeles, to Aberdeen, South Dakota. The San Bernardino Sub on which this train is traveling heads east to, eventually, Chicago, and the track on the left, Metrolink’s Orange Sub, is the old Santa Fe "Surf Line," which heads to San Diego. NS 9794 - Lilly PA - 09/24/08
Description:
The cool Autumn air at 1,904 feet (580 m) in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountains has already triggered a few trees to begin changing colors. An eastbound Norfolk Southern intermodal train passes under the old Pennsylvania Railroad position light signals as it climbs the grade. NS Dash 9-44CW 9794 and ES44DC 7606 are powering this double-stack train as it heads to Harrisburg. (Lilly, Pennsylvania – September 24, 2008)

BNSF 485059 • Skamania WA • 10/24/19
Description:
In 2012 the BNSF Railway repainted 27 grain hoppers with logos commemorating the various railroad which made up the BNSF. Each of these component railroads had their logos applied to three covered hoppers: Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe, Burlington Northern, Chicago Burlington & Quincy, Colorado & Southern, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Spokane Portland & Seattle and St. Louis- San Francisco (Frisco). One of the Burlington Northern Legacy cars, BNSF 485059, was spotted in a westbound grain train, BNSF G-CEGLVN9-22, making its way through the Columbia River Gorge as it traveled from Chester, Montana, to Longview, Washington, roughly 75 miles ahead. CP 8072 - Yorba Linda CA - 12/14/20
Description:
BNSF train S-LPKLHG1-11L heads for Los Angeles Harbor’s Global Gateway South with an interesting locomotive on the head-end: Canadian Pacific AC4400CWM 8072 (the former CP AC4400CW 9536). This train is seen at Esperanza, the old Santa Fe station location at BNSF San Bernardino Sub’s milepost 35.6, in a December climate that is completely foreign to a locomotive from above the 49th Parallel. This intermodal train originated at the Logistics Park in Kansas City KS. (Yorba Linda, California – December 14, 2020)

SCAX 694 - Yorba Linda CA - 12/14/20
Description:
Passing through Santa Ana Canyon is Metrolink train 817, recently placed back into service from downtown Riverside to Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo. This was a train taken out of service when the COVID-19 pandemic began, but was recently reinstated (even though the disease is now at record levels). Metrolink 694; a Hyundai-Rotem CTC-5 cab car, is leading this train at milepost 35.6 on the BNSF Railway’s San Bernardino Sub, and at the end of this six car train is F125 913. BNSF 693 - San Bernardino CA - 12/18/20
Description:
BNSF Railway Dash 9-44CW 693 was built by General Electric as Santa Fe 693 in September 1994, one year before the Santa Fe and Burlington Northern would merge to create the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (later shortened to just BNSF Railway). At the time, the Santa Fe’s new power was being delivered in the attractive red and silver "Superfleet" paint scheme, a throwback to the railway’s earlier, classic "Warbonnet" passenger scheme. The Nineties were a great time to railfan the Santa Fe as a result! While still wearing its original paint, poor BNSF 693 is clearly showing its twenty-six years of service, with the bright red faded to pink, the silver appearing more grayish and rust-colored primer on much of the engine. Still, as weather-beaten as BNSF 693 is, it is a welcome sight among the near endless parade of orange and black diesels found all over the BNSF system. BNSF 7824 - San Bernardino CA - 12/18/20
Description:
BNSF Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal train Z-MEMLAC7-15 (Memphis TN to Los Angeles CA), passing through Verdemont as it comes off Cajon Pass, has an interesting engine in its consist. Spliced between ES44DC 7824 and ET44C4 3923 is former Santa Fe Dash 9-44CW 693, still wearing its original 26-year-old "Superfleet" red and silver paint job! ATSF 693 was delivered one year before the Santa Fe merged with the Burlington Northern in September 1995, and while the colors look fairly worn, they are still a welcome sight among the predominantly orange and black BNSF diesels. UP 8088 - Colton CA - 12/18/20
Description:
Departing Union Pacific’s West Colton Yard for Portland, Oregon, is train MWCPT-17. This train is almost all on the railroad’s Mojave Sub (the former Southern Pacific Palmdale Cutoff, built over Cajon Pass in 1967) at this point, with only the last few cars and the rear DPU, ES44AC 8088, yet to cross over from the Alhambra Sub. Slover Mountain, alongside the mainline, has been reduced to, basically, a low rise, allowing a view of Redlands that had been blocked for as long as humans have lived in the area, (Colton, California – December 18, 2020)

BNSF 3970 - San Bernardino CA - 12/23/2020
Description:
On a day in which the cold Santa Ana Winds were blowing extra hard, making it difficult to even stand without some effort, a quartet of diesels is putting together a train of empty grain hoppers at the Ardent Mills elevator at Verdemont. BNSF ET44C4 3970, Norfolk Southern ES44AC 8114 (the Heritage unit painted in the colors of the original NS, a North Carolina regional railroad), NS AC4400C6M 4200 (rebuilt from NS Dash 9-44CW 8947) and BNSF ES44C4 3268 will depart later as BNSF train X-SBDBAR3-22A (Empty Unit Grain; San Bernardino to Barstow). Unlike other railroads, BNSF trains with a symbol beginning with an "X" are not Extras, but Empty Grain Trains. (San Bernardino, California – December 23, 2020)

BNSF 6893 - Barstow CA - 12/23/20
Description:
BNSF Railway Intermodal Stack Train S-LPKSCO1-20T, which originated in Kansas City KS and is headed to Long Beach CA, had its crew "die on the law" at Nebo, just four miles from the crew change point in Barstow, at 3:10 am on December 23, 2020. Between furloughed crews and crews taking time off for the holidays, this train sat in Nebo for hours. Reportedly the new crew would not arrive for 26 hours! BNSF ES44C4 6893 is working with EMD SD70ACe-T4 7219 and BNSF ES44DC 7304 to get this train over the road … all it needs is a crew! (Barstow, California – December 23, 2020)

Twenty-one-thousand six-hundred horsepower, freed from the confines of the Barstow fuel racks, are at work getting BNSF Railway Guaranteed Service Intermodal train Q-LACLPC6-23 up to speed – in this case, 70 mph (112km/h) – as the train heads east on the railway’s Needles Sub. Five different models are powering this train – BNSF ES44CW 7041, SD70ACe 9032, Dash 9-44CW 971, ES44AC 5773 and AC4400CW 5715 – although most of them look so much alike it is hard to tell. BNSF 6972 - Naperville IL - 09/23/21
Description:
BNSF Railway empty coal train E-CNMWTM0-26 originated in Monroe, Michigan, and it headed back to the Black Thunder Mine in Wyoming for another load. BNSF ES44C4 6972 and SD70Ace 8749 have a fairly easy job pulling these empty cars across the midwestern plains. (Naperville, Illinois – September 23, 2021)

UCSXT 2409 - Blue Island IL - 09/23/21ntitled
Description:
As CSX intermodal train Q016 heads west (behind CSXT ES55AC 747 and midtrain CSXT ET44AC 3448), its eastbound counterpart, train Q015, crossed the Calumet-Sag Canal on a through-girder bridge behind CSXT ET44AC (and midtrain ET44AC 3034). It seems odd to a westerner to see a single unit on the point of a long intermodal train. (Blue Island, Illinois – September 23, 2021)

IDTX 4608 - Hammond IN - 09/23/21
Description:
Amtrak train 371, the westbound "Pere Marquette," is not scheduled to stop at the carrier's Hammond-Whiting station, but as it was approaching the end of its trip to Chicago IL from Grand Rapids MI, the train stopped not to pick up or discharge passengers, but to hold for meets with two eastbound freight trains, making it forty-minutes late. IDTX SC-44 Charger 4608 is pulling three Superliner coaches (a 200-mile trip with no food service?!?) as the sun pokes through the edge of an overnight storm at a fortuitous time. An Indiana Harbor Belt train, behind "SD38-2" 3861 (originally Milwaukee Road SD40-2 188) and IHB GP40-2 4018 (ex-Southern Pacific 7615), heads north along Huish Drive. From this angle, the paint scheme looks a lot like Great Northern's simplified paint scheme that preceded the Big Sky Blue scheme. (East Chicago, Indiana - September 23, 2021)

CN 5366 - Gary IN - 09/24/21
Description:
In 1973, when General Motors Electro-Motive Division was inundated with orders for SD40-2s for just about every railroad, twenty SD40-2s were built for Missouri Pacific. Lucky number 13 was MP 807, which the railroad later renumbered 3107. When the UP acquired the MoPac in 1982, MP 3107 became UP 4107. As the UP continued to acquire new locomotive (as well as merge with even more railroads), UP 4107 became surplus and was one of 19 oof this order of SD40-2s sold to Canadian National, which renumbered it CN 6107. Following a rebuild in the mid-1990s, CN 6107 was renumbered CN 5366. By this point, there are nine of the engines from this particular MP order still in service on the CN. Note the shiny new air conditioner on the side of the nose of 5366 as it sits in the railway’s Kirk Yard. (Gary, Indiana – September 24, 2021) Photographed on railroad property with permission and full PPE and Covid precautions.

Sitting in Canadian National Railways' Kirk Yard, Elgin Joliet & Eastern SD38-2 668, one of the few (if not the only) EJ&E SD38-2s to get repainted in CN paint, was the last SD38-2 built for the EJ&E, which was absorbed into the CN in 2013. In the 1970s, this was the EJ&E's Bicentennial locomotive. (Gary, Indiana - September 25, 2021)

BNSF 699 - Dolton IL - 09/26/21
Description:
Sometimes things can get a little confusing in Chicago, at least to those of us who don’t visit as often as we’d like. BNSF Dash 9-44CW 699, ES44C4 6619, SD70ACe 8408 and ET44C4 3887 are heading eastward with train V-BLUMIN1-26, which is a westbound automobile train heading from Blue Island IL to Minot ND. The previous symbol for this power was a light engine move, D-CHIIHB3-25, so I’m confused. When does it turn west? (Dolton, Illinois – September 26, 2021)

CN 99 - Homewood IL - 09/26/21
Description:
Canadian National dome car 99, named "American Spirit," is one of at least seven business cars undergoing work in the railway’s Woodcrest Shops. The most visible change is the new red, black and white (or is it light grey, as on their diesels?) paint job being applied to business cars CN 1059 "Tawah," CN 1710 "Frasier Spirit," IC 101314 "Champlain," IC 800210 "Baton Rouge," IC 800413 "Great Lakes" and IC 800653 "Sandford Fleming," along with CN 99. This car was built as a 46-seat dome-coach by Budd in 1955 as Great Northern 1325. It was assigned number 4605 by GN successor Burlington Northern, but that number was never applied before it became Amtrak 9465. When Amtrak rebuilt it with Head-End Power, it was renumbered 9409. In the late 1990s, Montana Rockies Rail Tours operated the "Montana Rockies Daylight" on Montana Rail Link (as BKSX 9409), and when that service ended after the 2004 season, the car was sold to American Orient Express as AOEX 9409. From there it was sold to Canadian National. (Homewo

BNSF 8140 - Fullerton CA - 08/11/22
Description:
Hustling east from Los Angeles, heading to Chicago, is BNSF train U-LACCHI5-11Z. A U-train? This is a Special Unit Train, consisting of BNSF ES44C4 8140, covered hopper 808426 and unmanned track geometry car 90. BNSF 90 was built from a 1946-built Budd coach, originally Richmond Fredericksburg and Potomac 54-seat coach 804 (purchased for use in the Atlantic Coast Line pool), later sold to Amtrak at their car 5423. This car reportedly ended up in Canada, stored there and possibly numbered VIA 184. However, it was carrying number MRLX 5423 when delivered to the BNSF in 2014, which leads one to surmise that perhaps it never wore that VIA number, as Mid America Railcar Leasing (MRLX) was still using the car’s former Amtrak number (5423). BNSF’s unmanned track geometry cars are numbered 90 through 93. (Fullerton, California – August 11, 2022)

NS 8118 - Buena Park CA - 08/11/22
Description:
Holding Track 2 (of three mainlines) as it awaits an opening at Los Angeles Hobart Yard, and also awaiting a fresh crew as permission to proceed its final 16 miles, is BNSF Guaranteed Service Intermodal train Q-ATGLAC6-28L, which originated in Atlanta, Georgia. "Guaranteed Service" these days, however, likely doesn’t mean what it should, as crew shortages have dozens of westbound trains backed up for hundreds of miles on the BNSFs San Bernardino Sub, Cajon Sub and Needles Sub, creating delays of not just hours, but days. There is another westbound stopped two miles behind this train, and most likely another two miles ahead of it as well. Higher priority trains dont wait as long but a Q-train, the hottest on the BNSF, sitting without a crew would have never happened a few years ago. This train, with Norfolk Southern ES44AC 8118, BNSF ES44DC 7849 and BNSF Dash 9-44CW 4366 for power, was still sitting in the same location the next morning, and when I checked last was 99 hours 3 minutes behind schedule! AMTK 192 - Fullerton CA - 01/21/23
Description:
Once again, Amtrak train 3, the westbound "Southwest Chief", is running late … on this morning, 3 hours and 33 minutes late out of the next-to-last stop before arriving in Los Angeles. The usual pair of Amtrak P42DCs, in this case 192 and 75, this time running back-to-back (they are usually both facing forward), have just six cars in tow (two sleepers, a diner, a lounge and two coaches). Today’s train 3 will arrive at Los Angeles Union Station just 3 hours and 4 minutes late, having made up 30 minuues in just 26 miles, thanks to a generously padded schedule.
