An unidentified railfan caught the former Florida East Coast 4-6-2 Pacific #148 working the Whippany River tourist line sometime in the mid-1970's. This loco has led a long life starting with its build in April of 1920 by Alco-Richmond for the Florida East Coast as their #148. It was used early in its career onb the FEC's "Overseas Railroad" 128-mile extension from Miami to Key West. Unfortuantely, a 1935 hurricane took out ended the line. The loco was sold to US Sugar in 1952 where it worked carrying rww sugar toi the processing plant. Eventually it was sold to Sam Freeman in 1969 who restored it for tourist service on several lines like the Whippany River seen here. The date is approxiamte. |

Here is another view of the former Florida East Coast 4-6-2 Pacific #148 in front of the Whippany River shops area. Built by Alco-Richmond in April, 1920, it was sold to US Sugar in 1952. Later it was sold again to Sam Freeman who had it appear on several tourist lines across several states. US Sugar rebought the loco in 2016 and has restored it for service again. Original specs - - 68" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 22x26" cylinders, engine wt of 204,000 lb, tractive effort of 28,300 lb. An unknown photographer took the photo. The current owner, US Sugar, who was its 2nd owner repurchased the loco in 2016 and has restored it to active service as of 2020. It will be running on the US Sugar line, South Central Florida Express. |
