Easton helpers |
Description: |
Easton WA was the Northern Pacific's primary helper base on the east side of the Cascade Mountains and Stampede Pass. Where there was once a large yard, roundhouse and wooden coal dock there is now only about 3 tracks and units to help get grain trains over the pass. Here a four-unit helper set drifts back into town after working to get another westbound over the mountain. The crew will jump in the crew bus to the left when done. |

BNSF engine facility, Wenatchee |
Description: |
Wenatchee is BNSF's mid-state crew change base located on the ex-GN Seattle to Spokane mainline. At one time it was the eastern end of the road's electric operations, which ran west over the Cascade Mountains to Skykomish. The current engine facility is located downtown next to the depot and crew facilities. Here we see, from right to left, a GP38-2 switcher, five units on an empty grain train, a pair of local units and a duo of CSX C40-8s skulking about. |

Skunked on the mountain |
Description: |
An opportunity to drive over Steven's Pass and watch BNSF operations took a turn to the south due to the weather, gray and rainy, and the fact the road had closed the line for most of the day for a maintenance blitz, with only MOW trains operating. BNSF 6995 is shown here leading a ballast train at Gold Bar while a train-load of new concrete ties waits for its call on the adjacent track. |
