Title: |
New Haven PA's with Yankee Clipper |
Description: |
Train is westbound coming off the connector built by the Boston & Providence from its main line near Hebronville, MA to Boston Switch in Central Falls RI. The 4.4 mile line was built in order to join the Providence & Worcester (on the left) to use its route to the new Union Depot on the Providence Cove. The tower was erected in 1915 when the line through Pawtucket was rerouted and was used for only 20 years. Woodlawn tower -SS 154- was built in 1915 at the other end of the new route and assumed the duties of SS 156 when it closed in 1935. I regret that I no longer have accurate dates for the slides in this album so please disregard the dates given. |

New Haven PAs at Boston Switch |
Description: |
The westbound is joining the original Providence & Worcester route built in 1847 through Central Falls. The next year the Boston & Providence built a 4.4 mile extension from its main line to here (Boston Switch-the "west junction"). The B&P had built its main line to India Point in 1835 but when the P&W and New York, Providece & Boston built a Providence Union Station on the Cove, the B&P could only reach the new station by using the P&W route from Boston Switch. |

New Haven PA and DL-109 |
Description: |
Boston bound express passing under Pawtucket-Central Falls station which was opened in 1916 over the border of the two cities. Before the line relocation the tracks went straight ahead into downtown Pawtucket and the old station at Exchange Place. The new route was about 750 feet north of the original line. The station was closed in 1960 and finding another use for the derelict is still discussed. |

New Haven DL-701s and GP-9 |
Description: |
Westbound freight stopped for signals at SS 154 (Woodlawn Tower) at entrance to Northup Ave. Hump Yard. The old route through Pawtucket curves to the right. The new route built 1914-16 required considerable excavation. Note the 0.4 % grade which drops the track 8 feet at Dexter St. in the distant background. The rails at Boston Switch are 7 feet lower than at the Conant St bridge seen above the front of the train. (date is approximate) |
