Geoff hands off the token to the Signalman
Title:  Geoff hands off the token to the Signalman
Description:  The Bluebell Railway uses a token system to grant running authority on the line. Only one token may be issued for a section of the line at a time. As you leave that section, you hand the token off so that another train may occupy that section.

Our trusty brake van
Title:  Our trusty brake van
Description:  Unlike American frieght cars, British freight wagons were not equipped with automatic brakes. The brake van supplied part of the necessary braking power and was roughly equivalent to an American caboose..

Preparing to buffer up
Title:  Preparing to buffer up
Description:  Most of our second day on the line was spent learning how to "buffer up," that is, how to approach the brake van at the appropriate speed and then stop after gently meeting up with the vans buffers. Practicing this operation in full view of the sceptical stationmaster and his staff was nerve-wracking indeed!

Ready and Waiting!
Title:  Ready and Waiting!
Description:  Great Western Railway No. 9017 (sometimes 3217) the 4-4-0 Earl of Berkeley. This class of locomotives was nicknamed "Dukedog" because the GWR cobbled them together from the frames of Bulldog class locos and the boilers of Duke class engines. The resultant locomotives, while occasionally temperamental, served for many years on the GWR.

Ron couples us up
Title:  Ron couples us up
Description:  You wont find American-style knuckle couplers on freight wagons in the UK. Instead you will find an arrangement of hooks, links and turnbuckles. Here Ron is coupling 9017 to our brake van. He has already looped the link over the brake vans hook and is now tightening the turnbuckle to ensure we remain closely coupled together.
