Album Info:The largest surviving meter-gage railway network in Europe, the Hartz Mountain Railway is a railroad fan's heaven, rostering 25 operational steam. locomotives. We took the most popular train from Wernigerode to the top of the Brocken, the highest mountain summit in the Hartz Mountains, and the highest in northern Germany outside of the Alps. The Harzer Schmallspur Bahn carries over a million riders to the summit of the Brocken each year, and operates year-round. The track is welded rail, with a mixture of concrete, cast iron, and wooden ties. It's fully signalled. The ride from Wernigerode to the top of the Brocken climbs approximatley 2000 feet in about 20 miles. During the day I visited I got to see (8) different locomotives operating in steam, which is a personal record for me. (and I think unlikely to be broken)

Harzer Schmallspurbahn #99246 takes an "up" train through the woods above Schierke
Title:  Harzer Schmallspurbahn #99246 takes an "up" train through the woods above Schierke
Description:  Locomotive has a 2-10-2T arrangement with relatively small diameter driving wheels. Small diameter for a shorter wheelbase to negotiate very sharp curvature on this line & the need for drawbar pull on the 3% + grades.

HSB 997240-7 leads a "down" train above Schierke
Title:  HSB 997240-7 leads a "down" train above Schierke
Description:  After riding to the summit of the Brocken, we hiked down to the village of Schierke from the summit. There's a well-maintained walking path that parallels the Brockenbahn for much of the way, affording me the opportunity to grab shots of passing trains during my walk down the mountain.
