Illinois Central 0-10-0 #3603
Title:  Illinois Central 0-10-0 #3603
Description:  This may have been an IC Paducah rebuilt 0-10-0 from an existing 2-10-2 built by Lima in either 1917 or 1923. The Paducah shops rebuilt many in that group when later businees conditions demanded more speed than they could get from the original 2-10-2. It is mislabelled since there was not a 0-10-0 choice for this loco. Photo credit goes to C. W. Burns and obviously a reprint in April, 1970 from his negative.

Illinois Central 2-10-2 #2819
Title:  Illinois Central 2-10-2 #2819
Description:  Originally built by Lima in 1923, it was rebuilt and renumbered by IC. The 2-10-2 wheel arrangement was usually labeled as "Santa Fe" but with the 125 ordered from Lima they were known as "Centrals" instead. Used for freight hauling, this class was torn apart & rebuilt by the IC Paducah shops into different wheel arrangements like 2-8-2, 2-10-0, 4-8-2 and even 0-10-0. The class was scrapped between 1958-62.

Illinois Central 4-4-2 #1010
Title:  Illinois Central 4-4-2 #1010
Description:  This 1903 Rogers built was identified by the IC as in the 1002 class of locomotives. It had impressive 79" drivers and developed a respectable boiler pressure of 200 psi boiler pressure. A later SD70 shared the same number but this loco was the first to own the rights to it. Unfortunately, no location, date or photographer was marked on the back of the photo.

Illinois Central 4-8-2 #2503
Title:  Illinois Central 4-8-2 #2503
Description:  This is an example of one of the IC Paducah Shops rebuilds from older IC 2-10-2 locos done between 1937-43. This 2500 class was based on the original Alco "Mountain" type locos built in 1923. They had 70" drivers and developed an impressive 240 psi boiler pressure. C. W. Burns captured this brute under the coaling tower at Markham, IL - reprint is from May, 1970.

This 2500 class was based on the original Alco "Mountain" type locos built in 1923. They had 70" drivers and developed an impressive 240 psi boiler pressure. Illinois Central 4-8-2 #2605
Title:  Illinois Central 4-8-2 #2605
Description:  Here's another example of an IC Paducah built "Mountain" type locomotive. The 2600 class had huge 70" drivers and produced an astounding 275 psi boiler pressure to create a massive hauling machine! Again this photo is a May, 1970 reprint from the original C.W. Burns negative.

Illinois Central 4-8-2 #2410
Title:  Illinois Central 4-8-2 #2410
Description:  This 1923 Alco "Mountain" type locomotive was listed by the IC as the 2400 class following the guidelines of naming the class after the first number in the series. These units gave the IC much needed speed and increased pulling power for longer, heavier trains. The Paducah shops then built 76 more Mountain type locos between 1937-43 patterned after these first ones. This is a May, 1970 reprint from C.W. Burns original negative taken at 27th Street in Chicago. .

Illinois Central 2-8-4 #8005
Title:  Illinois Central 2-8-4 #8005
Description:  C. W. Burns shot this photo of the massive 2-8-4 Lima Berkshire which had already gone through an IC Paducah shops rebuilding and renumbering. The IC called this group "Limas" instead of Berkshires but most engineers on the line called them "Big Mikes". C. W. Burns noted on the back of the photo "This class was used on the I.C. Lines west and I never saw one." He also incorrectly identified the location as Bluford, IA instead of Bluford, IL.
