Title:
PRR 8664, AS-18AM, 1959
Description:
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 May 1959. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8664, #8658, and #8670. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8664 was constructed in February of 1958, #8658 in January of 1958, and #8670 in March of 1958. In this context, they're serving as tail-end pushers on a train of empty freight cars on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the pushers will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for further assignment. Photo taken just West of the 24th Street Bridge. William E. Burket Collection.

PRR 8659, AS-18AM, #1 of 2, 1962
Description:
Everyday. Here is the first of two successive original photos that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 07 October 1962. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8659 and #8670. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pulling a mixed-cargo freight train into the Hollidaysburg Yards. This photo taken along Broad Street, just West of the Jackson Street Crossing.

PRR 8670, AS-18AM, #2 of 2, 1962
Description:
Everyday. Here is the second of two successive original photos that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 07 October 1962. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8670 and #8659. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pulling a mixed-cargo freight train and are about to pass by the Passenger Station on their way into the Hollidaysburg Yards. (The bicycle in the right foreground was my main means of transportation during my early days of train watching and photographing.)

Title:
PRR 8670, AS-18AM, 1964
Description:
Wye Switches. Here is the third of seven successive original photo that I took at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 5 October 1964. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8670, #8660, and #8673. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8670 and # 8673 were built in March of 1858, while #8660 was built in January of the same year. These three units, PRR cabin car #477781, two freight cars, and three lead locomotives have just arrived from Altoona, proceeded up the New Portage Branch line for a short distance, and are now stopped. In a short while, they'll back into the Hollidaysburg Yards, pick-up a freight train, and then proceed up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West. Duncansville's Fifth Street is visible in the center, Second Avenue is at the left, while Third Avenue/US Route 22 is at the right. From 1834 to 1854, this was the right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad.
