Title:
L&N Train No. 12
Description:
Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 number 253 was leading train number 12 along Elysian Fields Avenue at Chartres Street. Number 12 was the daily-except-Sunday commuter run to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The train had a 5:15 PM departure from Canal Street Station, and it was just a few minutes into its 2-hour-20-minute trip. The train's first car is in the new (post-war) blue paint scheme, while the other cars are in the older green scheme.
At this time, the L&N had five tracks on the median of Elysian Fields from the Mississippi River to Tonti Street. The two tracks on the right previously belonged to the Pontchartrain Railroad. Mississippi River wharves are visible beyond the crossing tower at Decatur Street.
The 253 was one of 18 K-4B class Pacifics (246-263) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1920 and 1922. It was built in 1921 and retired on 16 October 1951. (approximate day of photo)
