NJT GG1 4875 |
Description: |
New Jersey Transit GG1 4875 at Wilmington, Delaware on an unknown day in May 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Two stories go with this photo. Story one: I was the Audio-Visual guy at a company in Chicago, and was assigned to spy on the competition's new stores on the east coast. The assignment involved my flying to Massachusetts, renting a car, driving to the location, and photographing the new store, then, get on a plane, fly to the next location, repeat. There were about a dozen locations ending in Washington DC. The purpose was to produce a slide presentation for my employer's Board of Directors. I determined that the flying was a hassle and phoned my boss and suggested that I keep the rental car and drive to the rest of the locations. Once that plan was approved, I plotted the railroad photo opportunities nearest to my primary objectives. The route took me to Wilmington, and while passing through town, I noticed a lot of cantenary wire on my left. I took the nearest exit and found my way to the Wilmington Shops. Upon arrival, I shot everything I saw with flanged wheels, and even managed a cab ride in a GP7 that was switching dead GG1's. I was preparing to leave when I stumbled on this scene. Story two: Number 4875 had derailed the front axle. The gentleman on the ground with hand raised rounded up the other two gentlemen, and with a carefully placed rock (seen just below the pilot) walked the GG1 back onto the rails. At this point, the flanges are riding the top of the rail, and a moment after I pressed the shutter button, the wheels droped back into running position. Number 4875 moved back to the shop for a quick inspection, the three gentlemen went back to their respective jobs, I departed for more corporate espionage, and the rock stayed in position for the next incident. All in all, one of the friendliest railroad locations I ever visited. |

Description: |
NJT 4876 speeds through Rahway with a Bay Head train. This was the engine that gained notoriety when it crashed into Washington Union Station with a r{naway Federal in 1953. It was cut in half and removed from the basement of the station to run again, which it did til 1983. Note the Pennsy car behind the GG 1. There were two rubscription parlors on the North Jersey Coast Line, one that ran from Newark as part of the Jersey Central side of the operation. The other was a Pennsy car that ran on a New Ysrk train. Both cars ran an inbound trip in the morning, and an outbound trip in the afternoon, serving refreshments appropriate for the time of day. |

Disaster Survivor |
Description: |
GG-1 4876 -- a 1939 product of the Pennsylvania Railroads Altoona Shops -- heads south after leaving Elizabeth, New Jersey. Elizabeths famous speed-restricted S-curve lies just ahead. 4876 is one of the most famous GG-1s because in 1953 it crashed through the floor of Washingtons Union Station. The incident, which became known as the "Wreck of the Federal Express," was caused by malfunctioning braking equipment in the train. Miraculously, there were no fatalities. After the wreck, 4876 was simply cut up into pieces by PRR engineers, rebuilt, and returned to service. She served the Pennsylvania, Penn Central, Amtrak, and New Jersey Transit for many years afterward and was among a handful of GG-1s that ended the GG-1s reign in 1983, faithfully delivering passengers to and from Penn Station and South Amboy. This photo was taken in the Spring of 1983 -- a few months before the end. |

"Celebration" Party for NJT GG1 #4877 |
Description: |
In celebration of the former Pennsylvania GG1 #4877 now serving the New Jersey Transit, the New Jersey Historical Society threw a party complete with an "Celebration" cake in honor of "Big Red" after a beautiful paint job setting it back to the "Big Red" color. It was also in anticipation of its retirement in October 29, 1983. In 1991 after Big Red's retirement in 1983, the NJT donated the locomotive to the United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey. Currently it is stored at the Boonton yard and hopefully will be part of the future New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center. Unfortunately, the avid rail fan who took these photos was listed. |

NJT GG1 #4877 - New Jersey Transit |
Description: |
This beautiful GG1 led a very productibe and interesting life. Built by GE and the PRR Altoona Shops in January of 1939 as PRR #4877, it served the Pennsy for many years pulling passengers at speeds of 100 mph. The once proud GG1 then bounced through the ill-fated Penn Central years and then onto the Conrail roster after the PC collapse. It next served in New Jersey commuter servce (NJDOT>NJT) unitl final retirement on October 29, 1983. In 1991, NJT donated it to the United RR Historical Society of New Jersey (URHS). It is stored in the Boonton Yards awaiting its new home in the future New Jersey Transportation Heritage Center. An unknown rail fan too this photo of Big Red at its celebration party. |

Description: |
The beautiful Art Deco styling by Raymond Loewy allows the GG1's to hold a special place in railroading history as one of the sleekest stylings ever created, at least IMHO! Even more impressive was its speed - often reaching sustained speeds of 100 mph, something that was lost after these beautiful machines were retired. Description: |
A small group of rail fans catch a view of "Big Red" with a long string of commuter cars doing what this locomotive was built to do - haul commuters at incredible speeds smoothly and efficiently. Sorry we will never be able to see one of these beauties perform again! An unknown rail fan too this photo of Big Red at its celebration party. |
