Description:  New Portage. Here is an original photo by Bruce D. Fales that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in June of 1947. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3481, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in Juniata as an I-1S during January of 1919, rebuilt as an I-1SA in October of 1941, and retired in January of 1952 after 33 years of faithful service. In this context, it's just passed through the New Portage Tunnel with a mixed-cargo freight train and is about to enter "The Slide" on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona. The girder bridge spans the westbound leg of the New Portage Branch line. The name of the person at the right is not recorded.

Both locomotives are products of the PRR's Juniata Shops. #3710 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in May of 1919 and retired in August of 1956, while #6769 is an M-1A (4-8-2) "Mountain" built in September of 1930 and retired in August of 1955. This photo was taken quite soon after the accident, witness the steam from rain falling on the still-hot firebox! Description:  FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1948. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3721 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #3721 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in Juniata during June of 1919 and retired in March of 1956 after 37 years of faithful service. They're serving as tail-end pushers on a freight train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Once past the Gallitzin Tunnels, they'll be uncoupled and head back down to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection.

This Decapod class was retired between 1956-65 after a very long working life. No exact date was given for this photo so an arbitrary one was used.

Photo Caption: "Heavy Freight on Center of Curve." Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #6330 and another steam locomotive whose number is not recorded. #6330 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in Juniata during July of 1919 and retired in December of 1955 after 36 years of service. They're heading up the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve on Track 3 with a mixed-cargo freight train.
