BO 0-10-0 #950 - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
Two of the 1914 Baldwin Santa Fe's - 6009 (serial #41701) and 6030 - were converted to mighty ten-wheel switcher/pusher engines at the B&O company's shops in the mid-1920s. The modfications entailed much more than simply removing each truck. Indeed, the only dimensions that remained the same were the cylinder volume, driver diameter, and wheelbase. A new boiler shorter by 25% and pressed to a higher degree provided the steam from water heated in a smaller firebox. Axle loading increased, a useful change in heavy switcher. Specs - 58" drivers, 225 psi boiler pressure, 30x32" cylinders, engine weight of 349,500 lb, impressive tractive effort of 94,966 lb. This 8x10 photo might possibly be an original B&O builder's photo but not stamped with the B&O logo as most are. |

Illinois Central 0-10-0 #3603 |
Description: |
This may have been an IC Paducah rebuilt 0-10-0 from an existing 2-10-2 built by Lima in either 1917 or 1923. The Paducah shops rebuilt many in that group when later businees conditions demanded more speed than they could get from the original 2-10-2. It is mislabelled since there was not a 0-10-0 choice for this loco. Photo credit goes to C. W. Burns and obviously a reprint in April, 1970 from his negative. |
