NJDOT GG1 4876
Title:  NJDOT GG1 4876
Description:  CR-operated NJDOT GG-1 4876 rests with both pans up between sister units at the South Amboy engine terminal. After retirement from NJDOT in 1983, the GG-1 was donated to NRHS Washington, DC chapter. This GG-1 was famously known to have piloted No. 173, the "Federal Express," from Boston to Washington, DC on January 14, 1953. While approaching Union Station, brake loss of 13 of it's 16 cars made the train a runaway, causing 4876 to smash through the track bumper, the iron track gate, demolish the stationmaster's office, run out onto the concouse floor, and fall through the concrete floor to the basement below, along with two of it's steel passenger cars. After shipping to Altoona, 4876 was placed back in service just 10 months after the accident. A tribute to the amazing skill and determination of the Altoona shop crews. CR retired their freight fleet of GG-1's in 1979, but the NJDOT-contracted GG-1's 4872-4884 saw their operating days extended to the fall of 1983.

NJDOT GG1 4876
Title:  NJDOT GG1 4876
Description:  NJDOT GG1 4876 waits for assignment in a line of former PRR GG1's at South Amboy. This same GG1 was the famous runaway that crashed through the concourse of Washington's Union Station in 1953, and was back on the rails 10 months later, rebuilt from 3 cutup sections by the Altoona shops. 4876 was one of the last remaining operating GG1's in October, 1983 when the final curtain fell by NJ Transit on the ageless electrics.

Title:
Description:  NJT 4876 speeds through Rahway with a Bay Head train. This was the engine that gained notoriety when it crashed into Washington Union Station with a r{naway Federal in 1953. It was cut in half and removed from the basement of the station to run again, which it did til 1983. Note the Pennsy car behind the GG 1. There were two rubscription parlors on the North Jersey Coast Line, one that ran from Newark as part of the Jersey Central side of the operation. The other was a Pennsy car that ran on a New Ysrk train. Both cars ran an inbound trip in the morning, and an outbound trip in the afternoon, serving refreshments appropriate for the time of day.

Disaster Survivor
Title:  Disaster Survivor
Description:  GG-1 4876 -- a 1939 product of the Pennsylvania Railroads Altoona Shops -- heads south after leaving Elizabeth, New Jersey. Elizabeths famous speed-restricted S-curve lies just ahead. 4876 is one of the most famous GG-1s because in 1953 it crashed through the floor of Washingtons Union Station. The incident, which became known as the "Wreck of the Federal Express," was caused by malfunctioning braking equipment in the train. Miraculously, there were no fatalities. After the wreck, 4876 was simply cut up into pieces by PRR engineers, rebuilt, and returned to service. She served the Pennsylvania, Penn Central, Amtrak, and New Jersey Transit for many years afterward and was among a handful of GG-1s that ended the GG-1s reign in 1983, faithfully delivering passengers to and from Penn Station and South Amboy. This photo was taken in the Spring of 1983 -- a few months before the end.
