CSS 802 |
Description: |
A very rare electric locomotive, CSS 802 was one of twenty units constructed by GE in 1949 for export to the USSR. However due to deteriorating relations between the US and the Soviet Union at the time, the locomotives were instead rebuilt to standard gauge and sold off to American railroads, including the Chicago South Shore & South Bend. 802 served on the Chicago area line until retirement in 1983. Nicknamed "800s" on the CSS, they were also referred to as "Little Joes" in reference to where they were originally supposed to be sent. |

Originally built by GE for the Soviet Union in 1946, the deal was cancelled due to eroding relations between the countries. Chicago South Shore & South Bend bought 3 of the units. This is the sole surviving operational Little Joe now protected at the Illinois Rwy Museum in Union, IL. The slide lists Hammond as the location but almost looks like Burnham yard across the border. Another iconic item was this double headed "Little Joe" electric locomotive built by GE in May of 1949, originally ordered by Russia but cancelled, hence the nickname after Joseph Stalin. The unit has the 2-D-D-2 wheel arrangement. Luckily it survives at the Illinois Rwy Museum where it has been lovingly restored to its shiny brilliant orange and silver paint scheme. No date was given for this photo but it appears it was a rail fan trip in the mid-1960's. No photographer listed. |
