Description:  This is most likely PRR train #1077, the "Nellie Bly" which ran from New York to Atlantic City in 2 hrs and 45 min and would have received an engine change here from a GG1 to the K4s. For sure, the train is on the track headed down the Bordentown Branch to Camden (and possibly beyond to AC). K4s #5409 was a 1927 product of Baldwin Locomotive Works. The new pilot and relocated headlight are part of post war modernization that CKF said made it an example of "What a good looking locomotive should not look like

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5426, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1927 and retired in August of 1956 after 29 years of faithful service. Note the electrified third rail installed at this location. The photographer's name, the date, and the location are not recorded. Description:  Here is page five of an 11-page cover article by Frederick Westing entitled "The Locomotive That Made Penn Station Possible." It was published originally in the October 1956 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 32. Painting Caption: "The common meeting ground of K-4 Pacifics and DD-1 electrics was Manhattan Transfer, an engine-change point just east of Newark whose high-level platforms could be reached only by rail. Trains commissioned Artist George Gloff to re-create that era." Depicted here are PRR engines #5426 and #24. #5426 is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during February of 1927 and retired in August of 1956. #24 actually consists of #3980 and #3981. Both are DD-1's (2-B+B-2) built in Juniata during July of 1910 and rated at 3,160 horsepower; both were later transferred to the Long Island Rail Road and renumbered: #3980 became "360-A" and #3981 became "356-B."
