CBQ 504 lined up with BN 3 |
Description: |
IRM really is a classic EMD fan's paradise, I can't believe it took me this long to get to Diesel Days (or even to IRM at all, other than for a quick pop-in mainly to snag some video of Frisco 1630 on its first weekend back in steam in May of 2014)! |

CB&Q 504 and C&NW 6847 blast off with the last "coach train" of Diesel Days 2022 |
Description: |
It was great seeing all the classic EMDs, ALCos and GEs in action for Diesel Days, but it would have been nice to see engines like this (or the pair of ALCo roadswitchers they replaced on this train) with a "photo freight" of rolling stock of the type they would have handled from the 1960s through the '80s. |

CB&Q SD24 509 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD24 509 eastbound at the west end of the Hinckley ( Illinois ) manual siding, the gravel road is South View Street, on an unknown day in June 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. I'm not certain about either the date or the location ( location inofomation from Bob Campbell ). For sure it was the summer of 1963. The SD24 was eastbound on the Aurora - Savanna subdivision, and I was standing on the short end of GP7 241 on the head end of the westbound Oregon Way Freight. The Oregon Way Freight was perhaps the last mixed train service in Illinois on the CB&Q. In place of the usual waycar (caboose) was a 40 foot combine mail/coach. There was no mail carried on the way freight, although the combine had been built for that service. I would purchase a round trip ticket in Aurora, and the ticket agent would direct me to the platform for the arriving Train # 21, the Morning Zephyr. I would tell the agent that I wanted to ride the Oregon Way Freight. That would usually get a peculiar look from the agent, and I would be directed to the platform next the the freight by-pass track. The arriving way freight usually had to be notified that it had a passenger, so rare was that instance. The presence of a passenger was an annoyance to the rear end crew, and a railfan was particularly annoying, but the crew had made accommodations for that event, and a wood slat was installed for each mail compartment door, and I was allowed to hang out the door for the trip. If I was too annoying, I was banished to the head end for the head end crew to watch over me, resulting in a cab ride and this photo. I recall one instance of a lone passenger being picked up at some rural location. The way freight came to a halt with the coach steps over a rural crossing. The conductor got off the train and helped a little old lady board. When we got under way, she paid her fare with fresh eggs and a ham sandwich for each of us, including me. The train stopped again at another rural crossing several miles further west, and the little old lady got off and ambled down to a nearby farmhouse. |

CB&Q SD24 509 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD24 509 at Clyde, Illinois on March 7, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1959 (c/n 25206) on EMD Order 5598 for 16 SD24's, it became BN 6249 and was retired in June 1982. A couple of notes about the SD24 in general: the semi-circular bulge in the hood behind the cab is often referred to as the turbocharger bulge; in fact the bulge accommodated the traction motor and generator blowers. The SD24 was the only EMD product equipped with D-47 traction motors which did not work in its favor when it came to stocking replacement parts. And, the SD24 was EMD's fist foray into the turbocharger arena, and like most first efforts, it was not without problems. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD24 515 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on May 23, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in May 1959 (c/n 25212) on EMD Order 5598, it became BN 6255, then MMID 6255, then FRVR 2401, then WC 2401. Judging by the long shadows and new Great Northern U25B cut in behind the motors, this is most likely Train 83, daily freight between Chicago and St. Paul, departing Chicago at 6:40 PM. |

run thru power |
Description: |
Between the interlocking towers of St Anthony on the west end of the 4 track GN main and St Anthony Park on the double track NP main (not to be confused with Park Jct and the Minnesota Transfer crossing)--- I felt lucky to catch this set of run thru power on the Union Cutoff. As to why this transfer from Daytons Bluff came up the NP and then went thru the Union Cutoff at St Anthony Park instead of coming west on the GN freight mains from Westminster Tower is beyond me! So where was St Anthony Park and the Union Cutoff you ask?! Just west of the state fair grounds and Snelling Avenue where the circus trains used to unload and maybe still do today. |
