FA old style |
Description: |
The LIRR was in paint scheme transition in the late 1970s. They had received their new GP 38s-their first EMDs-in a blue and white scheme inspired by the Milwaukee Roads bicentennial unit. Other power was starting to make the transition, but the new scheme had not made it onto everything yet, and the FAs were still in the gray with blue stripe at the window band level. One of them is going away under the signals on an Oyster Bay train, hanging onto its old paint just a little longer. |

Late afternoon view |
Description: |
In the late afternoon during the summer, the sun swung around to the north side of the tracks, and this angle was possible. We see an Oyster Bay train crossing Carnation Av as it rolls through Floral Park station en route to connections at Jamaica The exhaust from the generator set in the FA makes it look like it is actually powering this train. Nice thought!! |

Sleepy station |
Description: |
The look of the Ronkonkoma station area is that of a sleepy outpost in the pine barrens. This was the terminus of most trains on the Main Line at the time-the LIRR had just extended a pair of rush hour runs to Yaphank-but was a fairly quiet place, compared to its counterparts on the north(Port Jeff) and south (Babylon and Patchogue) shores. There was a single track main, and a small yard with a wye jusu east of the station. The station had an agent/op who handled tickets and cleared trains past block station KO, as well as handing up orders to freights. In ten years, this will be a completely different place. We see a westbound preparing to depart with the typical train set, an FA ln the west end, three cars(five was more common), and a GP 38 on the east end. |

Queens Village was at the end of the four track Main Line. East of here, the two tracks to Hempstead separated at Queens, with the two Main Line tracks going on to Hicksville. As such, there was a lot of action. Here we see a Hempstead train pulling away, having just discharged its riders as an Oyster Bay train blows past on track 3. The Hempstead train will stay where it is, taking that track to Garden City, where it will turn south to the end of the line. The Oyster Bay train will cross over one track to the left and continue out Main Line track 2 to Mineola. |

Crossing Clinton |
Description: |
The Kabin Kar Trek has gone as far out on the Mitchell Field line as it can, and changed ends. It now approaches the old Clinton Rd station in Garden City in a display only an Alco can provide. |

Clinton Rd station |
Description: |
The one remaining station on the Mitchell Field Secondary is at Clinton Rd in Garden City. The Kabin Kar Trek ran out as far as they could go, then stopped here for photos. This is the train behind a pair of MTA painted C 420s smoking past the old station. |
