Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8675 and two more units whose road are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8675 was constructed in March of 1958. Also visible are two open hopper cars: PRR #702470, as well as Cambria & Indiana Railroad #4459. Bottom Right Photo Caption: "Giant furnaces, ore pile, and dumper form background as trains reach Weirton Steel." Prominent here is PRR engine #8949, an LS-25M built by Lima-Hamilton in August of 1951, rated at 2,500 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966. |

Also visible near the apex of the Curve is Pennsylvania Railroad steam locomotive #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918 and retired in May of 1956. |

Both were built by the American Locomotive Company. #8590 is an AS-16M constructed in December of 1955 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. #8676 is an AS-18AM built in March of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. Derailment. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 21 May 1965. Shown here at the far left (L to R) are PRR engines #8676 and #8665. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They have just arrived to serve as "helpers" for an westbound passenger train due to arrive shortly. Visible in the center is PRR engine #8677, an AS-18AM built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower. It is coupled to the "eastern" work train and steam-powered crane that are rerailing the derailed cars and locomotives of the eastbound freight train on the next track over. Visible on the right (L to R) are the two derailed locomotives, PRR engines #5631 and #8890. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company in 1950 and rated at 1,000 horsepower each. #5631 is an AS-10AM while #8890 is an AS-10. Visible in the background are four of the original PRR 12th Street Car Shop buildings. A small portion of 10th Avenue is visible in the immediate foreground. (#14 of 14) |

AHC. Here is the third of three successive photos that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Summer of 1959. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8678 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8678 was constructed in April of 1958. They are pushing a merchandise freight train ~ headed by five EMD EFS-17M's ~ up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and return down the Alleghenies to East Altoona for yet another run up the Mountains and back. |

Malinowski. Here is duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Robert R. Malinoski that was taken just West of the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 5 June 1965. Shown here are eight diesel-electric locomotives climbing the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a Pennsylvania Railroad mail and express train bound for Pittsburgh and points West. In the lead are helper engines #8679, #8665, and three more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8679 was constructed in April of 1958, while #8665 was built in February of the same year. Behind them are three unidentified units of the "EP" Class built by GM-EMD. It must have been an exceedingly-heavy train! ("PrrFan18n") |
