Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4396 and #1638. #4396 is an I-1SA built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during February of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in December of 1943, and retired in March of 1956. #1638 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during March of 1917 and retired in November of 1958. They are hauling a mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Altoona and points East.

RDG 2-8-2 #1700
Title:  RDG 2-8-2 #1700
Description:  This was the original experimental Mikado-type locomotive built by the Reading shops in 1912 to test the 2-8-2 configuration. The loco had 61.5" diameter drivers, 24" x 32" cylinders, and a 215 psi boiler pressure. It exerted 54,772 pounds of tractive effort and it weighed 329,310 pounds. The firebox was 326 square feet, the evaporative heating surface was 4,224 square feet and with the superheater the combined heating surface was 5,217 square feet. The design of this 2-8-2 which was given road number 1700 was deemed to be a success leading to futher Mikados on Reading's roster. No photographer was listed for this nice action shot.

Partial Caption: "Fifty Years Ago Sunday ~ It was 50 years ago, Nov. 6, 1916, that the above disastrous freight wreck occurred near the Wye Switches at Duncansville. An eastbound freight train, No. 2736, went out of control descending the New Portage branch from Gallitzin to Hollidaysburg and ran away to crash into engines, Nos. 2477, 2759, 2665, and 971, standing near the Wye Switches.
