BO 4-6-2 #5261 - Baltimore & Ohio |
Description: |
This 4-6-2 Pacific stands in the Lincoln Park yard in Rochester, NY, on a cold winter day although the photo lists Lincoln Park, IL as the location. With Jim Ford's help (see comment below), I have it correctly labeled now. Originally built by Alco-Brooks in 1923 for the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh line as their #676, it's number was changed when it was eventually absorbed into the B&O roster in 1932 as a P-19 class member. No date or photographer listed so an approximate date was used. |

BO 4-6-2 #5629 - Baltimore & Ohio alias |
Description: |
B&O 4-6-2 #5629 is on a fan trip but it's an alias of the true loco, GTW #5629. There is an interesting history how a GTW loco ends up being painted like a B&O loco. Built by ALCo-Schenectady in March of 1924 as Grand Trunk Western 4-6-2 Pacific #5629, the loco served the GTW for nearly 35 years before retirement in 1959. To save it from being scrapped, it was purchased by Richard Jensen of Chicago, IL, for its scrap value of $9,540.40. It was eventually moved to Hammond, Indiana and a local group of railroad enthusiasts restored it to running condition. Steamed up for the first time in October 1961, No. 5629 made its debut pulling a trip over the Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal Railroad, for which it was repainted as a B&O as seen in this photo. Unfortunately, a dispute between Jansen and Metra where the loco was stored ended badly with the loco being scrapped on July 14, 1987. No photographer was listed for the photo. |

BO 4-6-2 #5629 alias |
Description: |
Posing as B&O 4-6-2 #5629 for a fan trip over the Chicago B&O lines is Grand Trunk Western #5629. It never appeared on the official B&O roster so is a "Cinderella" listing. Built by ALCo-Schenectady in March of 1924 as GTW 4-6-2 #5629, it was repainted as B&O #5629 for fan trips starting in 1961. This is long after it had retired from the GTW roster. A special crane was brought in to the Walkerton, Indiana yard just to load the coal for the fan trip and a water truck supplied the necessary water. Sadly, after a dispute between the owner, Richard Jensen, and Metra where it was stored late in the 1980's, it was sent to the scrapper on July, 14, 1987. . |

BO 4-6-2 #5629 - Baltimore & Ohio alias |
Description: |
GTW 4-6-2 Pacific #5629 dressed up as B&O #5629 sits in the make-shift coaling yard in the former B&O Walkerton, Indiana yard. A crane was brought in to load the coal and a water truck supplied the water for the fan trip. Quite a sight to see a steam loco back in the northern part of Indiana. Note the wooden B&O caboose #X2125 to the side of the locomotive. It serves as a great vantage point to watch the coaling action! |
