L&N HUMMINGBIRD |
Description: |
The Louisville & Nashville‘s HUMMINGBIRD was awaiting its departure from the railroad’s JULIA STREET YARD in New Orleans. The cars had been turned on the wye at GENTILLY YARD and serviced during their layover in the Crescent City. This was one of four sets of equipment built by American Car & Foundry between September and November 1946 for this train and the GEORGIAN. E7A 759 had been built in April 1945 as the 459A and was one of eight units delivered in this blue-and-aluminum paint scheme to match the new cars, but the engines and cars were repainted into standard blue L&N paint scheme beginning in 1950. The photograph was taken from Julia Street and the building on the left was the yard office. |

L&N No. 6 from No. 99 |
Description: |
This was the view from the cab of Louisville & Nashville Train 99 – the combined southbound PAN-AMERICAN and GULF WIND – as it met L&N Train 6 – the northbound HUMMING BIRD. The trains were on the Southern Railway at milepost N.O.T. 4 near EAST CITY JUNCTION in New Orleans. No. 6 had E7A units 761 and 780 with 8 cars and was due out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal at 8:15 AM, while No. 99 had E6A 770 and E7A 792 with 10 cars and was due into NOUPT at 9:20. The photo was taken at 8:31, so both trains were on time, as No. 99 had 50 minutes of padding in its schedule for the last seven miles of its trip, between the L&N-SOU connection at L&N JUNCTION and NOUPT. |

L&N No. 9 (1) |
Description: |
This was a view from the cab of Louisville & Nashville E7A 780 on train No. 9, the southbound PAN-AMERICAN, as it made its way into New Orleans. The train was running alongside Interstate Highway 10, having just passed through GENTILLY YARD and crossed the Louisa Street grade crossing. Just ahead was the Southern Railway crossing at N.E. TOWER (milepost 803.75), while No. 9’s destination at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal was about 10 miles away. The train was discontinued about two years later, on 1 May 1971, with the advent of Amtrak. (approximate date of photo) |

This was a view through the fireman’s windshield of Louisville & Nashville E7A 780 on train No. 9, the southbound PAN-AMERICAN, as the train prepared to back into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal at SOUTH WYE JUNCTION. On the left was Earhart Boulevard, while just ahead was the South Dupre Street grade crossing and beyond that was an Illinois Central switch engine with a cut of gondolas. L&N E7A 780 |
Description: |
It's Saturday 1 May 1971, and at midnight Amtrak had taken over or eliminated almost all of the country's long distance passenger trains. Louisville & Nashville E7A's 779 and 780 had just brought the very last L&N passenger train into New Orleans, and were resting at the NOUPT sand tower. In a couple of hours, they would back into the station and then leave with all of the L&N's passenger cars that were still there. |

L&N E7A 781 |
Description: |
Louisville & Nashville E7A units 781 and 778 were on train 34, the northbound PIEDMONT at New Orleans. These units were two of eight E7A’s delivered in April 1945 as the 458AB-461AB – right above E6A units 450AB-457AB – and wore this unique blue-and-aluminum paint scheme for use on the new HUMMING BIRD and GEORGIAN streamliners. In late 1946 units 450A-461A were renumbered 750-761 and 450B-461B became 770-781; and at the same time, a reflectorized number plate was mounted above the front buffer. These plates remained until the units were remodeled with large number boxes and repainted into the standard blue-and-cream scheme. |

L&N No. 8 and SOU No. 47 |
Description: |
Southern Railway No. 47 – the SOUTHERNER from New York City – was sitting in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal next to Louisville & Nashville train No. 8 – the combined PAN-AMERICAN for Cincinnati and the GULF WIND for Jacksonville. The SOUTHERNER was due in at 7:10 PM while the L&N train was scheduled to leave at 8:45, so No. 47 must have arrived a little late this evening. Notice the altered lights on L&N 791. E6A 771 was the only other L&N E-unit like this, although E6A 756 and E7A 761 had their lower light changed. (approximate date of photo) |

The water pouring out of the nose of Louisville & Nashville E7A 791 showed that the boiler water tanks were full as the unit was being serviced from the opposite side at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal engine facility. L&N E6 and E7 units which had been modified with enlarged boiler water capacity – 2,050 gallons instead on 1,050 – had nose-mounted water filler openings such as this. On the next track, NOUPT SW8 number 1 was moving a set of Illinois Central power which included E6A 4003. (approximate date of photo) |

L&N Julia Street Yard |
Description: |
This image shows the variety of motive power that could be found at the Louisville & Nashville's Julia Street Yard during the transition from steam to diesel. Pictured here were K-4 Pacific 269 (Baldwin 1923) with commuter train No. 12, J-3 Mikado 1591 (Alco 1923), E7A 792 (EMD 1949), and Alco S1 57 (Alco 1949). The yard was about three blocks south of the railroad’s Canal Street Station, and packed into an area of about four square blocks were a freight yard, coach yard, enginehouse, turntable, freight houses and warehouses. The coach yard was on the extreme right of this photo. (approximate month and day) |

L&N No. 9 |
Description: |
On the afternoon of 18 September 1970 Louisville & Nashville train 9 – the southbound PAN-AMERICAN – was crossing Industrial Parkway in eastern New Orleans with E7A 793 and one coach. The reason for this unusually brief consist isn’t known, but the train was running about six hours late! Sometimes the L&N ran a train like this from Flomaton, Alabama to New Orleans if the GULF WIND from Jacksonville missed its connection with No. 9; but on this day, this was the only L&N passenger train into New Orleans. The 793 went back north a few hours later on No. 8, with five cars. |

L&N E-Units |
Description: |
Up until the mid-sixties trios of Louisville & Nashville E-units showed up every day at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, on the southbound GULF WIND - PIEDMONT - PAN AMERICAN and the northbound CRESCENT - PAN AMERICAN; but by 13 October 1970 this was VERY unusual. Also, when the L&N regularly ran three E-units together, the last unit almost ALWAYS faced backwards. E7A 793 and E8A 796 were built new for the L&N; while E8A 788 was originally Frisco 2014 named TRUXTON, and had been purchased by the L&N in 1965. An unidentified Illinois Central E-unit was parked by the sand tower, just in off of the PANAMA LIMITED. |
