NOUPT |
Description: |
The water pouring out of the nose of Louisville & Nashville E7A 791 showed that the boiler water tanks were full as the unit was being serviced from the opposite side at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal engine facility. L&N E6 and E7 units which had been modified with enlarged boiler water capacity – 2,050 gallons instead on 1,050 – had nose-mounted water filler openings such as this. On the next track, NOUPT SW8 number 1 was moving a set of Illinois Central power which included E6A 4003. (approximate date of photo) |

Southern 722 |
Description: |
The first Southern Railway steam excursion train into New Orleans was the WALTER DOVE HOMECOMING SPECIAL, which arrived at Union Passenger Terminal on Sunday 28 March 1971 behind 2-8-0 722. (Mr. Dove had been the Southern’s General Road Foreman of Engines and was retiring from a 52-year career with the railroad.) The train had pulled straight into the station, so here on 30 March Mr. Bill Purdie – the Southern’s Master Mechanic-Steam – was looking down from the cab of the locomotive as NOUPT SW8 number 1 was preparing to turn it on the wye. The 722 subsequently ran a couple of excursions from New Orleans to Hattiesburg and back before heading for home on 10 April. |

NOUPT SW8 2 |
Description: |
New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal SW8 units 1-3 were built at EMD’s Cleveland Plant in December 1953 and were used by the Southern Pacific until the new station was placed in full operation in April 1954. Here is NOUPT 2 at the Espee’s AVONDALE YARD, just west of New Orleans, with T&NO caboose 517. Notice the orange wing design on the unit’s nose. These disappeared as the locos were repainted. NOUPT 1 and 3 remained at the terminal until 1990, but number 2 was sold to Jones & Laughlin Steel around 1960. |

NOUPT |
Description: |
This view of New Orleans Passenger Terminal SW8 number 3 in 1974 was an image of contrasts. To the left of the engine, covered by arches, was the terminal's unused 8-track post office annex; while on the left was Railway Express Agency, no longer served by rail and occupied by a few REA trucks. Elsewhere, the image illustrated the buildings which began altering the city's skyline over the previous 10 years. The tall building just to the left of the switcher is the 14-story office tower which had been completed in 1964 as a part of the city$s new main post office. To left left of this, in the background, is the building at number 2 Canal Street, next to the Mississippi River. This 33-story structure was completed in 1967 as the city's first skyscraper. On the very left is the 45-story Plaza Tower, completed in 1969 as the city's second skyscraper and located right across the street for the railroad station. On the left is the 51-story One Shell Square, opened in 1972 and still the tallest building in the city. In the 40-plus years since this photo was taken, the skyline has been filled with an assortment of other tall structures. (approximate date) |
