PC 6970, AS616, 1972 |
Description: |
Everyday. Here is an original photo that I took in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, in March of 1972. Shown here is Penn Central Railroad engine #6970, an AS616 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton for the Pennsylvania Railroad as number "8970" in June of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. By the looks of it, this locomotive ~ now renumbered "6970" ~ has been sold for scrap and is awaiting shipment to its final destination. Photo taken near the intersection of Allegheny and Blair Streets, next to the AIRCO Plant. |

PC 6974, AS-616, 1971 |
Description: |
Blackhawk. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Fred Byerly that was taken in Wilmington, Delaware, on 18 June 1971. Photo Caption: "AS-616, Penn Central No. 6974. Wilmington, Del. June 18, 1971." PC #6974 is an AS-616 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton as Pennsylvania Railroad number "8974" in May of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and renumbered "6974" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Baldwins in Action ~ On North-Eastern Railroads" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (892-39). |

New to site. No. 6974 may have been the only Baldwin road switcher (as opposed to yard switcher) to wear the full PC dress black. Wilmer Hendricks photo, from the Ralph L. Phillips collection of the Bay State Model Railroad Museum. |
