UP 4-10-2 #5094 - Union Pacific Overland
Title:  UP 4-10-2 #5094 - Union Pacific Overland
Description:  Battling a steep grade is the Alco-Brooks 4-10-2 #5094. Built in June of 1926 as Los Angeles & Salt Lake (LA&SL) #8803, it was rebuilt with two cylinders rather than the original three and renumbered 5094 when it entered the UP roster. Original specs - serial #66729, 63" drivers, 28x30" outside cylinders, 25X30 center cylinder, oil burner, engine weight of 4-5,700 lb, tractive effort of 72,400 lb.The loco was "vacated" in February of 1948. No location, date or photographer was given but the photo must have been taken after the 1942 renumbering and before retirement in 1948. Spencer T2D (see comment below) helped out with identifying the location as Mormon Rock at Cajun Pass, CA. Thanks Spencer for your help!

UP 4-10-2 #5099
Title:  UP 4-10-2 #5099
Description:  Originally built by Alco-Brooks as 3 cylinder UP 4-10-2 #8808 (serial #66734, class FTT-1), it proved to be less successful than predicted so the UP shops rebuilt the loco in January of 1943 by removing the center cylinder and renumbering it UP 5099 (class FTT-1-2). Since the loco was scrapped in November of 1949 at Pocatello, ID, this may be one of the very last photos taken of it before the scrapper's torch reached it. Jack A. Pfeifer photo

UP 4-10-2 #8804
Title:  UP 4-10-2 #8804
Description:  Built by Alco-Brooks in May of 1926, this 3 cylinder variant was primarily used for the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Rwy. Union Pacific labeled the 4-10-2 wheel configuration as "Overland" rather than using the traditional label of "Southern Pacific' type for obvious reasons. The loco was not very successful and was rebuilt by the UP shops in April of 1942 to a two cylinders style and renumbered UP 5095. The rebuilt loco lasted until being scrapped in April of 1953 at Cheyenne, WY. Original specs - 63" drivers,210 psi boiler pressure, 25x30" high pressure cylinders, 25x28" low pressure center cylinder, engine weight of 404,000 lb, tractive effort of 77,917 lb. UP 4-10-2 #8807
Title:  UP 4-10-2 #8807
Description:  The "long legged" UP 4-10-2 #8807 was built by Alco-Brooks in May of 1926 (serial #66733, class FTT-2. Although not particularly successful as a 3 cylinder variant, the loco was rebuilt by the UP shops. They removed the center cylinder and dropped the boiler pressure to 200 psi in the overhaul done in Jamuary of 1943. It was renumbered UP 5099. Both versions (labeled "Overland" by the UP) were used primarily in the LA&SL system. The rebuilt loco lasted until being scrapped in March of 1954 at Pocatello, ID. Original specs - 63" drivers,210 psi boiler pressure, 25x30" outside cylinders, 25x28" center cylinder, engine weight of 404,000 lb, tractive effort of 77,917 lb. Unknown photographer
