NKP RS36 872
Nickel Plate Road RS36 872 at Calumet City, Illinois on June 13, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in August 1962 (c/n 84105), on Shop Order S-3348, classed ARS-18e by the NKP. The RS36 was the result of sagging sales of the RS32. Alco decided to upgrade the RS32, incorporating all the improvements of the RS27 and RS32, retaining the DL701 specification. Powered by a Model 251B 12-cylinder prime mover producing 1800 horsepower, production ran from February 1962 to August 1963, for a total of 40 units built. The NKP received 11 RS36's, the last two with high short hoods containing steam generators. The NKP traded in its PA1's and Alco used the GT566 main generators from the trade-in's on the RS36 order.
