Burlington Northern Railroad SD7 6059 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built as CB&Q SD7 411 in December 1952 (c/n 17407) on EMD Order 5140, it became BN 6059 and was retired in August 1983. This particular unit picked up an extra electrical receptacle at the top of the short hood next to the class light. Here is the explanation, from former CB&Q electrician and later BN Diesel Superintendent Wesley Haas (by way of Hol Wagner): This is the 64 volt receptacle for the Lincoln Rotary, to run control circuits and anything that required the 64 volt power for the plow. The plow had a small diesel engine to supply 110 volts for interior lighting. |
