Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9968 westbound on Train #17, the California Zephyr, at Eola, Illinois on January 8, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in September 1952 (c/n 16709) on EMD Order 2048A, became BN 9968, was sold to Amtrak August 1, 1972 becoming 351, was retired May 28, 1975 and sold for scrap to Naporano Iron & Metal Company, Newark, New Jersey. On this date the lines of the California Zephyr are interrupted by a Havelock-built baggage car substituting for the usual Budd bagage car. There is an extra flat top coach behind the baggage car, and another flat top coach is between the first two dome cars, indicating that the usual second (of four) dome coaches has been pulled for service. On the left are a few out of service heavyweight coaches which will likely make the journey across the main line to the rails on the far right, the interchange tracks with the EJ&E and the leads to the Eola Reclamation Plant, where most likely they will be cut up and sold for scrap. To the right of the Zephyr is a cut of cars coming off the EJ&E, which passed over the CB&Q just beyond the signal bridge in the background. |
