Mr. Bitton: I really don't know much about locomotives or their history (my pictures here are byproducts of industrial photography projects I have been assigned over the years), but according to this site http://www.trainweb.org/emdloco/32000.htm the MKCX 8302 was originally a Southern Pacific "SD-45" number SP 8820. Now, if that's the case, twen Morrison-Knudsen went to a lot of trouble to "smooth out" the angled radiator section on the rear of the body. Perhaps the radiator cores for thj "flat" variety of cooling units we see on the 8302 are more readily available so M-K rebuilt the unit with that in mind, but what do I know....Fellow contributors, please chime in!

This SD40M as MK called it, was originally an SP SD45 as you say and was one of about 3 or 4 rebuilt from SD45s that looked like this with radiator sections from SDP35s that were mainly ex UP.

No doubt about the rear being former SDP -- very nice catch, Geneva
