Amtrak P30CH 720 at Alton Junction in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 720 is stepping onto new rails, the diamonds at Alton Junction have just been replaced. The Dearborn Street Station was closed in 1971 but the tracks leading to it remained for a few years, including the diamonds and switches at this location. Also note in the middle left of this photo the backwards word AMTRAK. This was the street entrance to the former AT&SF coach yard, which Amtrak used for a period of time until consolidating activities at the former PRR coach yard south of Union Station. |
