| Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad (reporting mark MKT) AS16M 138 at Kansas City, Kansas on August 15, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is a Baldwin AS16 built in October 1951 as MKT AS16 1583 (c/n 75435) and sent to EMD during 1959-60 for a new prime mover (567C) which required an EMD long hood. Although the EMD was rated at 1750 hp, it was downrated to accommodate to 1500 to work with the re-used Westinghouse electrical gear. This is the rear of the Engineer's side, the long hood was Forward. Unlike most diesel builder's hood locomotive designs this one had two cab doors to the rear. I would hope it had at least one door to the long hood deck, making it a three-door cab. I wonder if there are any four-door cabs? |
