What was this Auto Train doing there? Was it lost. I never heard of it going near the GA/AL border.

This is the Midwest Auto Train which ran to Louisville, Ky. And, actually, it is the combined Auto Train and Floridian as you can tell from the ex SP baggage car behind the engines. They were regulars on the Floridian at the time.

This is a great photo. I live about 12 miles from tis location and as a "pre-camera 14 something" I actually saw the combined Auto-Train/Floridian come through Saffold once. I remember the AT locomotives and how long the combined train was. Too bad both operations would be gone in just a few years.

Great memory, Bob. Bryan would agree, with the siding on this side of the train, this looks like Alaga siding which ends on the west bank of the river between Alabama and Georgia, about two miles west of Saffold

You may be correct, I just can't remember for sure. I just found them recenly and the other pictures on that roll were taken at Saffold. Wish I had more, but I think this is all. I do have a Super 8 film of the Full AutoTrain arriving in Thomasville a year or so earlier. I need to get it transerred to video and get that posted sometime.

This is so cool! This may be one of only a tiny handful of photos of the Auto Train along the Dothan Sub. Both the Auto Train and Floridian were late night trains though this area, which fuels the main reason why photos are nonexistent. Great work!
