Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4001 at Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in December 1952, print by Don Gruber, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4001 was completed by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa in February 1938 using components supplied by Baldwin and Commonwealth. As built it was shrouded in fluted stainless steel to match the then-new Zephyr trains. The shrouding only lasted a couple of years until the new stainless steel E5's arrived. The shrouding was removed and the 4001 became just another 4-6-4 assigned to various trains as needed. As built it had three Boxpok drivers, but it is shown here with a spoked third driver, likely acquired during shopping. Photos show the spoked driver as early as 1946. Number 4001 was retired and sold for scrap in October 1960. |
