Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9988B at the head end of the North Coast Limited in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on an unknown day in April 1965, Anscochrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. This is a slide I purchased in a hobby shop for 25 cents. It is hand labeled; 'North Coast Limited In Milwaukee During Flooding Of Mississippi River'. The date stamped on the slide mount is APR 65. I have a slide of an abbreviated Twin Cities Zephyr that I shot in Naperville, Illinois on April 19, 1965 with the same notation. The rules and agreements governing a train from another railroad require that a CB&Q crew operate the train under the supervision of a pilot from the host railroad. In this case, the CB&Q would need to transport relief CB&Q crews from their home base to locations on the Milwaukee Road where crew changes took place. If the detours needed to operate for an extended period of time, the CB&Q would put their crews up in local hotels for the duration of the detour operation. Needless to say, an expensive way to run a railroad. |
