UP 604
Delivered to Southern Pacific as GP38-2 4840 in June 1980, this locomotive was assigned to snow fighting serviced and based in California. Although this EMD now wears the uniform of new operator Union Pacific, the Espee applied icicle breaker, rotating windows, and center window grills remain. Note the nose mounted headlight has been moved between the numberboards and the nose scar repaired. I don't know if these diesels work in regular service year round or are stored until winter but this entire group looks well cared for.

Matthew Liptak General I read in a TRAINS Magazine article that UP takes all the snow fighting gear off during the summer and then use the Geeps on locals. When winter arrives they give them a good inspection and replace stuff like brake shoes, etc. They also install a control panel in the cab for the flanger that runs along with them. To keep the horn operational, they install heating coils to melt away snow and ice. 9/23/2014 12:19:00 PM
