That's an awesome shot Hiroyuko. I lived in this area for over forty years yet never photographed the float operation.

Beautiful shot. I had no idea there were still car barges in service in New York.

Stunning. Only way it could have been better was if the fog had cleared.

There was a time, years ago-like 60-that this kind of thing was a common sight in NY harbor. The only lines to come into NYC proper were the Pennsy, via Penn Station, and the NYC, into Grand Central, and they also had a freight line down the west side, which Amtrak uses to reach Penn Station. South of 30th St, it's now the High Line Park. New Haven also came into NY, passenger trains to GCT, freight to Bay Ridge-not far from where you took this-via Hell Gate. All the Jersey side roads, LV, Erie, Lackawanna(later EL) Jersey Central, as well as Pennsy and NYC, which had major terminals in Jersey and used carfloats, came to the waterfront and floated their traffic to various terminals in the city. It could get crowded on the water. Great photo, by the way. Home page 11-27-2020
