Between 1914-1916, the Baldwin Locomotive Works built 3 triplex locomotives for the Erie Railroad. Labeled class XA for experimental, they were built to extremely high tractive force to move trains over steep inclines. The locomotive had one high pressure set of cylinders and two low pressure sets. The third set of drivers were under the tender, technically making it the world's largest tank engine in a way! This photo appears to be a Baldwin Works photo taken at Philadelphia. |
