CSX never bought SD40-2's. They came from SBD and Chessie. The SBD ones came from L&N, SCL and Clinchfield. The Chessie ones came from B&O, C&O and Western Maryland. And then of course all the stuff that came from Conrail. At any rate, CSX 8000 was L&N 8000, which was built in 1979. It was part of the third order of SD40-2's that L&N got. The first 2 orders were L&N 3554-3613. The order that started with L&N 8000 was in 1979. L&N, SCL and CRR started ordering units together and they were delivered in Family Lines paint, so there was a contiguous block of SD40-2's in the low 8000's. When the CSX merger happened, they went with the SBD numbering scheme. SCL, L&N and CRR SD40-2's started with 8000 (L&N 8000) and after that, L&N's SD40-2's that were in the 3500 and 3600 series were renumbered starting with CSXT 8182 which was L&N 3554.
